Cell Phone Picture: Something American CONTEST RESULTS!

Hey everyone! It’s that time! Time to find out who won Cobalt’s and my little cell phone contest from the 4th of July.
Here’s how it worked. On the Fourth of July, we texted a bunch of our friends this message:
Challenge! In honor of merica’s birfday, take a cell phone pic of what you think best embodies America. Text it to me by midnight tonight. The winners will be posted on Potassium’s blog this Friday
and then we got a BUNCH of awesome pictures. It was SOOOOO fun! You guys are amazing! I’m thinkin’ we’re going to have to do another contest soon. So don’t be sad if you didn’t get to participate this time.
Anyway, let’s get onto the results of the contest already!

First things first:
Grand Prize

Her shirt says “Yo soy legal” in case you can’t read it. Awesomeness. We loved it. :)

First Runner Up

Going classy with some American history there. We history lovers certainly appreciated it. I also love the addition of the flower.

There was a TIE for Second Runner Up

We just really loved the photograph here. It is just a really great picture and well composed (plus it has our nation’s capitol building in the background… That’s pretty patriotic if you ask me…)

This one is just pure hilarity…

Third Runner Up

This picture was really creative and fun. Great Work! :D

The rest of the pictures… so awesome…and in no apparent order

The caption: “America in Speedo Form!” Disturbing yes, but hilarious? Also yes. :)

Gotta love Independence Day…

Ahhhh the wide open spaces of America…. We got a few of these entries actually. Very nice, very nice. :)

Ohhhhh we Americans sure do love to eat. The caption here: “Look at the food. And the prices. ‘Merica…”

Caption: “Big blue sky, big city, and vast interstate. AMERICA.” :)

Sad… isn’t it funny that most “American” things aren’t even made in the US? How does that work?!

Mmmmmm Fourth of July food! This is actually similar to the picture that Cobalt would have entered had we not been judging the contest…

A different take on Fourth of July food! You want Chinese food instead? You got it! Gotta love ‘Merica and our options for food!

Cell Phone Picture: Forbidden Love!

For this picture, ignore the messiness that is my desk at work and focus on the two main characters in the foreground. Oh my! What happened for this picture was that I put my notebook underneath whatever Pedro Armadillovar was sitting on and suddenly Pedro and Bernard the pterodactyl were kissing! An armadillo may love a pterodactyl but where would they live?! :-/ I love how my triceratops looks scarred for life and my Freud bobblehead is analyzing the situation. “Hrmmm… curious… curious indeed…” Hahaha…
I hope you all have wonderful (and safe) holiday weekends (woot woot! 3 day weekend!)… anyone doing anything awesomely amazing?

Cell phone picture: What crazy creature is this?!

Yay! A post two days in a row! :) Today’s cell phone picture comes from my old room… I moved into a new house about a month ago and I took this picture as I was taking stuff off my old walls. Basically, it comes from a set of wall decals that you can use to make your room look super decorated. I was ripping them off my wall (they don’t like to come off in one piece apparently/sadly) when I decided that this chunk of wall decal actually looked kind of neat! Tada! A blog cell phone picture was born! :) I’ve decided that I don’t want to tell you what it actually is/used to be. Instead tell me what you think it looks like! :) I think it looks like a lurking creature or a guy in a scuba mask… Thoughts?

Cell Phone Picture: Rodrigo y Gabriela Concert!

This week I went to see the band Rodrigo y Gabriela in concert! It was amazing! We were jumping up and down and dancing by the end. I already loved their music but the concert took my love to a whole new level. For example, they played my favorite song, 11:11, and all of their energy made the live version of the song incredible. They were super awesome and fun with their amazing Mexican/Irish accents and their funny stories. I love their love of metal music mixed with traditional fun acoustic guitar music. It makes for an amazing and fun sound! Plus it was just so fascinating to watch them play (Gabriela’s fingers were moving so quickly over the strings!). Definitely an awesome experience. If you have never heard of Rodrigo y Gabriela, I highly recommend their music.

Cell Phone Picture: Sharks on Vacation

This week was spring break here at the school so Cobalt and I decided to take a little vacation. We went to Pagosa Springs, which is in Southern Colorado, to go relax in the natural hot springs there. Although we had a hell of a time getting over Wolf Creek Pass both coming and going, it was worth it just to spend some time in the healing waters of Pagosa Hot Springs. The springs ranged in temperature from 86 degrees F to 111 F (there was one at 115 F but that one was closed because… well, that is hot!). Cobalt and I tried out each hot spring (going through 23!) before picking out our favorites and lounging in them for awhile.
When we weren’t relaxing in the warmth, we were eating… a lot. Pagosa offers such a wealth of delicious restaurants so we had one awesome meal after the next. This picture comes from where we ate lunch before leaving town (to go battle the pass for the second time). Well I love sharks and as soon as we determined that The Chivalrous Shark was indeed a restaurant (took us awkwardly looking in the windows because we couldn’t find it online), we decided that we had to eat there before we left. Anyway, it was your typical fish and chips shop with a New Orleans feel. Plus they actually served shark…….. which I tried. And then felt really bad because of how much I love them… >_< Anyway, it was a confusing moment for me but it turns out that I didn't actually like the taste of shark all that much so maybe that is a good thing. All the more energy to love them and not wonder if they are actually delicious… ;) And with that, I hope you all have wonderful weekends!

Cell Phone Picture: Sleepy Potassium

Last Friday marked the end of an EPIC week. I was really really stressed with school and life and so by Friday I was exhausted. Cobalt and I headed down to visit his family pretty much as soon as I got out of work too so I got no down time. So we set up a little bed for me in the back of his car… that way I could rest while he drove. Apparently I passed out for long enough for him to snap this picture on his cell phone.

Cell Phone Picture: Squishy!!!

Today you guys get to see Squishy! Sorry he’s all blurry. Dumb cell phone camera… He was a gift from Cobalt a few months ago. :) I apologize for the lack of amazing story behind him because I have been so busy with crazy research (soooo tired)/getting ready for the Oscars! I am so excited about the Oscars this weekend! Cobalt and I are getting all dressed up and going to a fancy party! :) But first, we still have two best picture nominations to see! So far we have seen 8 of the 10 best picture movies, listened to all of the best score nominations, seen all the live action and animated shorts, and probably more but I can’t remember right now. Wow… so many movies…

Black and White Cell Phone Picture: Science Rules!

So I combined two of my blog rules today to bring you Bill Nye! Last night, we got to go see Bill Nye the Science Guy at CU Boulder. It was so exciting. I loved his show when I was a kid. Bill Nye and my parents were totally my heros… :) Anyway, his talk was awesome and inspiring (also very funny)! He chose to talk a lot about climate change and what we can do about it. I found his topic choice especially interesting because I just went to another talk by David Goldstein, who works for the National Resources Defense Council, and he chose to use climate change as an example for how politics/the public view science and scientists. My friend Paul summed up his talk pretty nicely if you’re interested. I thought that Bill Nye’s talk was very appropriate and helpful in explaining climate change in a way that understandable to anyone.
ANYWAY… We weren’t allowed to bring cameras into Bill Nye’s talk… so I was left with the cell phone camera. I took this picture of the program before the talk for you guys to see. :)

Cell Phone Picture: New Lab Chairs!

Last week, we got a shipment of new chairs for the lab and my whole lab migrated down to the stock room to help carry the chairs back upstairs to lab! Then we had a little chair building party because we couldn’t wait to sit in them! It was a joyous occasion seeing as we used to have really crappy desk chairs (my old chair was like a bucking bronco and it kept trying to kick me out of it!)… Plus look how comfy these new chairs look (I assure you, they are)! Also, they roll a lot. We have had a lot of fun rolling around in them this week… er… working diligently. ;)
Hope you all have good weekends! We’ve had a bit of a cold spell here but now it’s finally warming up again.
